Some notes while going through web logs after some major site changes. (Well, bare domain -> www, migrating content between sites and setting upredirects.)

  • Apparently /apple-touch-icon.png and derivatives are a thing I need to worry about now. Favicons all over again.
  • One of my sites is missing robots.txt ?
  • /humans.txt is a (minor) thing now. Took a quick peek. I’ll see who’s asking and decide if I care to add it.
  • If I care to spend the time, I could audit:
    • Whether any of these php probes are hitting anything ever
      • Update: Hmm, I’m getting 500 errors against /cgi-bin/php* . I would expect those to be 404. Need to check those out and make sure I don’t have CGI enabled.
        • I may be inadvertently invoking the php interpreter with my fastcgi filters?
      • Fixed: Oh, the backend server was logging 404 but returning 500. I seem to have an old config that intended to return a 503 instead of a 404 back when I had several sites down for maintenance. But it wasn’t working so after logging a 404 it returned a 500 due to the bad web.config and 503 error page. I just removed the unneeded offending code.
    • It looks like some of the 404’s may be broken links on my own sites unless there’s a really stubborn and persistent bot out there
  • /how-to-arp-a-in-ipv6.html and /powershell-split-and-join.html are by far the two most popular articles on any of my sites. I should probably highlight them on the front page, perhaps at the end of posts, and ensure they’re up-to-date.
    • I bet there’s a Powershell cmdlet for neighbor discovery I could add
    • I should write more about Powershell here and see if it’s as popular
  • Older posts on my various fastcgi setups are mildly popular and could definitely use some updating and perhaps Dockerization
  • The squid apt caching post could also use a review and Dockerization
    • And expand its use to caching docker image pulls?
  • /.well-known/apple-app-site-association is a thing: https://developer.apple.com/library/content/documentation/General/Conceptual/AppSearch/UniversalLinks.html
